🐾 How to Prep for Your Pet Photography Session

💡 What to Expect

First off — yay! You’ve booked a session with Soul & Snoot, and I’m so glad you’re here. Whether this is your first time in front of the camera or your dog’s a total pro, here’s how things typically go down:

  • We'll meet at the agreed-upon location (or your home if it's an in-home session)

  • We’ll take some time for your pet to sniff, explore, and get comfortable

  • I’ll use treats, squeaky toys, silly sounds, and light chaos to get fun, candid shots

  • You can relax — no need for perfect poses. The best photos come from real moments.

  • Sessions usually last 20–60 minutes, depending on your package, and I’ll guide you every step of the way.

🐶 How to Prep Your Pet

  • Exercise lightly before the session
A short walk or play session beforehand can help take the edge off any zoomies, especially for younger pups.

  • Teach (or brush up on) the “stay” command
It doesn’t have to be perfect — but having a basic stay can be super helpful during your session.

  • Arrive early and let them do their business
Plan to get to your session a few minutes early and take them for a short walk. Letting them sniff around and take a potty break helps them settle in (and avoid accidents mid-photo!).

  • Groom, but don’t overdo it
Wipe any eye boogers, brush out dirt, and give a light bath if needed — but don’t stress! A little fluff and mud are part of the charm.

  • Bring their favorite things
Toys, treats, squeakers, or even a blanket they love. These help me capture their real personality.

  • Feed lightly
If your session is treat-based, feeding a full meal right before may make them less motivated. A light breakfast or dinner is ideal.

  • Let me know anything important!
Behavior quirks? Medical needs? Reactivity around other animals? I’ve seen it all and will tailor everything for your pet’s comfort and safety.

  • Don’t stress if your dog doesn’t listen
Seriously. It’s okay if they don’t sit, stay, or follow any commands. We’ll still get amazing photos — promise.

🧍‍♀️ What to Wear (If You’re Joining Your Pet in the Photos)

You don’t need to dress up unless you want to — the goal is to keep the vibe natural and timeless. Here are a few tips:

  • Choose neutral or earthy tones (think soft greens, browns, creams, rust, denim) to match the outdoor backdrop

  • Avoid logos, super-bright colors, or busy patterns

  • Wear comfortable shoes — we might move around a bit!

  • Layers photograph beautifully, especially during cooler seasons

  • If your dog has a bright harness or leash, consider swapping it for something neutral (or I can edit it out later)

Most importantly: be yourself. If you love cozy flannel, wear cozy flannel. If you want to go full flowy dress on a mountain, I’ll cheer you on (and make it magic).

🐾 Bonus Tips

  • Leashes are 100% okay — I can edit them out later.

  • Don’t worry if your pet doesn’t sit still — I expect movement, sniffing, distractions, and a little chaos.

  • This should be fun — bring your sense of humor and a pocket full of treats.
